Case Study: Royal Bank of Canada - Agile Methodology Consulting

Primary tabs

Situation

Royal Bank of Canada had established an Agile Centre of Excellence to develop an agile project delivery methodology, integrate it with the organization's governance framework, and deploy it throughout the organization including communications and training. The initiative was going well, with a methodology developed, hundreds of people trained, and eleven pilot projects underway; however, as the pilot projects were working through the process, they were coming up against organizational barriers to their agility, including independent quality assessment groups, enterprise architecture bodies, standardized metrics reporting, and programme management practices, among others,

Solution

The head of the bank's Agile CoE reached out to GenXus consultant Kevin Aguanno to get assistance in dealing with these enterprise impediments to full agility. GenXus' Agile Methodology Consulting services draw upon experts with many years of deploying agile methods in large, complex organizations. Aguanno brought his executive consulting skills to bear and quickly helped Royal Bank learn from what has worked for other institutions in the past facing similar challenges. He also worked with the programme management and standardized metrics reporting teams to show how agile projects can coexist with their existing frameworks with little change.

Client Feedback

“Kevin has been instrumental in helping us shape the Agile COE strategy at RBC. He brought a broad range of knowledge that extended far beyond the Agile techniques. But what significantly distinguished him from the crowd is his deep understanding of the mechanics of large organizations and how to effectively influence them in adopting Agile. Kevin is a senior consultant that you should not be afraid to introduce to your senior executives.”
— Jean-Francois Gingras, Head - Agile COE, RBC
