Situation

The Central Group is the leading supplier of marketing-at-retail solutions in Canada. As an industry leader known for its innovative use of technology to provide retail analytics and promote retail sales, The Central Group was sought out by a retail chain to showcase "the art of the possible" in a new flagship store being built in Manhattan. The desired solution included two digital kiosks. The first had multiple functions: to help shoppers locate products throughout the store, to allow shoppers to register for the loyalty card program, and to capture shopper traffic statistics through video analytics and identifying cellular devices passing by through their Bluetooth signatures. The second kiosk was located at the cosmetics counter and allowed shoppers to apply virtual makeovers to their own photos using a variety of brand-name products. The final results could be posted to their Facebook accounts and a list of required cosmetics would be printed out as a shopping list for the user. Due to a staffing shortage -- and a lack of practical experience with high-end kiosk technologies -- The Central Group sought out a GenXus project manager to provide part-time project management assistance on the project.

Solution

Working directly with the C-level executive sponsors of the project in The Central Group, the client contacts at the retail chain, and the staff at various partner companies who provided services ranging from software programming to kiosk housing construction, a GenXus project manager pulled the team together to deliver the final solution on-time to its Manhattan location in time for a splashy launch event attended by celebrities and media. The GenXus project manager also arranged post-launch support including on-site hardware support from a Manhattan-based computer support provider. All-in-all, it was a very successful pilot project that is leading to additional business with the retail chain.
